Newly qualified GPs and International Medical Graduates (IMGs) can be assured of a warm welcome and receiving varied and exciting opportunities and support programmes in Gloucestershire.

A local programme (Spark) has historically been available to all newly qualified GPs within 12 months of qualifying, offering mentoring, coaching, peer support, educational events and a chance for a CPD funded project.
Although national funding for this scheme recently ceased, NHS Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board (ICB) and the Primary Care Training Hub have been working hard to ensure that a similar scheme is made available to newly qualified GPs. We are pleased that our next Spark fellowship cohort started in September 2024.
Unique to the Gloucestershire Spark scheme, newly qualified GPs have the opportunity to undertake funded and supported projects in an area of their choosing. This has enabled many GPs to develop special interests, portfolio careers and further support their leadership development.
The funded projects, in addition to mentoring from experienced local Gloucestershire GPs and facilitated peer support, means a wrap around scheme is in place to guide your transition as a newly qualified GP.
Appraisals are an important opportunity for new GPs to review their year and look forward, to formulate their personal learning requirements. The Primary Care Training Hub offers lots of support and helpful information to ensure you get the best from this process in terms of both professional development and personal needs.
The ICB and Primary Care Training Hub also offer specific peer support to GPs transitioning to working in the UK from overseas to guide you through immigration requirements, ensuring you have the correct permissions to work and that sponsorship licenses are put in place.

What our local GPs
have to say
Dr Bethannie McIntyre

I qualified in October 2022 after completing my GP training in Gloucestershire.
I have been very well supported by my practice and found the transition from trainee to fully qualified GP completely manageable.
Gloucestershire’s SPARK programme is available to newly qualified GPs and offers fantastic support including mentoring, coaching, peer support, educational events and a chance for a CPD funded project in an area of your choosing.
Being a GP is incredibly rewarding, I’m always learning something new and interesting and finding opportunities to bring about positive change for the future of GP services in the county. It’s great to have supportive colleagues around you and the Primary Care Training Hub here is also very active. I would urge any newly qualified GP to come and talk with us and explore what Gloucestershire has to offer.

As a Portfolio GP and a Clinical Lead for the Integrated Urgent Care Service at Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust, I’m thrilled to share my journey in this exceptional county. Since joining the NHS here, I’ve experienced unwavering support for professional growth and development.
Gloucestershire’s commitment to healthcare excellence is evident in its robust training programmes and diverse career pathways. NHS Gloucestershire ICB has supported my pursuit of additional qualifications, including a PgDip in Diabetes and a Diploma in Urgent Medical Care, which have enhanced my ability to deliver high-quality patient care.
The collaborative atmosphere fosters innovation and continuous improvement. I’ve had the rewarding experience of mentoring GP trainees and leading impactful quality improvement initiatives.
Beyond professional growth, Gloucestershire offers an excellent quality of life. The grammar schools have been fantastic for my children’s education and the area’s natural beauty provides a perfect backdrop for family life.
For any GP considering a move, Gloucestershire offers the ideal blend of career advancement, supportive networks and work-life balance. It’s a decision you won’t regret -join us in this thriving medical community!

I grew up in the county and, after spending time working abroad in Australia and qualifying as a GP in London, I moved back to the area in 2021 with my young family. Gloucestershire is a wonderful place to raise children, offering excellent schools, family-friendly events like the annual Festivals, and breathtaking countryside right on the doorstep.
With a strong interest in public health, I am passionate about improving local population health outcomes, particularly through addressing inequalities. I’ve been fortunate to pursue a Health Inequalities Fellowship through Rosebank Health, the Primary Care Training Hub, and the ICB.
As a newly qualified GP in the area, the SPARK Fellowship has provided invaluable networking opportunities and mentorship, both of which I highly recommend to all newly qualified GPs.
